Aspire Sports Academy commences registration in Nigeria

Aspire Sports Academy commences registration in Nigeria

Nigerian youngsters
wishing to turn to football as career have an opportunity to do so as
the Nigerian arm of renowned Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence,
based in Doha, Qatar, has thrown registration open for this year with
the project beginning next month.

Lamine Savane,
director of the project in Africa, told journalists in Lagos at the
weekend that the aim of the programme is to help youngsters fulfil
their dreams of playing football while at the same time getting
educated.

“We are here in
Nigeria because we believe there is a large pool of football talent
that need to be developed for the benefit of the game in the country,”
he said. “A lot of these children are yearning to play football but do
not have the opportunity to do so. Our aim is to give them that
opportunity and also to make it possible for them to get some
education.”

He noted that
Nigerian arm of the project, which started in 2007 with eleven young
Nigerians awarded educational scholarship at the academy in Doha, was
impacted positively on the families of the players. He stated that one
of the players in that first set, John Felagha from Bayelsa State, was
one of the goalkeepers in Nigeria’s silver winning U-17 team at last
year’s U-17 World Cup hosted by Nigeria.

Not a scam

Also speaking at
the occasion, Sam Ahmedu, a retired colonel in the Nigerian Army and
director of the project in Nigeria, said progress have been made by the
project in the country. He stated that at the moment, five of the
current set of players under scholarship with the project, have been
invited to the current Golden Eaglets squad being handled by Monday
Odigie.

“This project is
not like others you have where young players are exploited,” he said.
“Like we have always said, this is not one of those projects used to
siphon players abroad to be used for the national of Qatar. The Qataris
who are funding this project can afford to go to Brazil for instance
and buy players and get them to become Qatari citizens. It just one of
the ways they want to reach and help youth in different parts of
Africa.”

Giving details of
preparations for this season, Ahmedu said only children who are 13
years old are eligible to take part in the project.

Presently, there
are eleven Nigerians at the academy in Doha with one of them, Jasper
Uwaegbulam from Imo State distinguishing himself. Only recently he
scored four goals in match against the Qatari U-18 team.

Vuvuzela threat to hearing

Vuvuzela threat to hearing

South Africa’s
vuvuzela, the trumpet that will be a fixture at World Cup matches, is
the loudest of all fan instruments and can cause permanent hearing
loss, a global hearing foundation said on Monday.

Sports Soccer
governing body FIFA has okayed the plastic trumpet for the tournament,
which starts on Friday, after organizers did tests at a match at
Johannesburg’s 95,000-seater Soccer City due to worries the din could
drown out emergency announcements.

While normally
reserved for local games, the vuvuzela can now also be heard at warm-up
matches and practice sessions ahead of the tournament, even those not
involving South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.

The Hear the World
Foundation — an initiative formed by Swiss hearing products group
Phonak to raise awareness about hearing loss — said tests showed it
produced a dangerously loud sound, far out-blasting a chainsaw.

The tests,
conducted late last month in a sound-proof studio, found the vuvuzela
emitted 127 decibels, more than the air horn — 123.5 decibels — and
the Brazil’s samba drums.

A referee’s whistle was fourth while the cowbell, a favorite in Switzerland and Austria, trailed at 114.9 decibels.

“To put it in
perspective, when a sound is increased by ten decibels our ears
perceive it as being twice as loud, so we would consider the vuvuzela
to be more than double the volume of the cowbell,” audiologist Robert
Beiny said in a statement.

Hear the World
said extended exposure to 85 decibels risked permanent hearing loss and
urged fans to use protection, such as ear plugs and ear muffs.

The vuvuzela can
be heard across South Africa as football fever grows ahead of the June
11-July 11 tournament, from airports to shopping centers, but at
stadiums tens of thousands of people will blow the trumpet, such like
constant car hooters in a traffic jam.

Some foreign
players complained at last year’s Confederation Cup about the din, and
Thailand manager Bryan Robson that he was unable to communicate with
his players during a friendly against South Africa.

FIFA President
Sepp Blatter has defended it, though, saying it as much a part of local
soccer as bongo drums and chanting in other countries.

South Africa coach
Carlos Alberto Parriera wants even more noise to help inspire the
world’s lowly 83rd-ranked Bafana Bafana through its tough Group A
matches against Mexico (June 11), and former champions Uruguay (June
16) and France (June 22).

The study found
that it was not only trumpets, drums and horns that can hurt your ears,
two excited supporters cheering a goal on either side of you can
produce 121.6 decibels, also drowning out a chainsaw at just 100
decibels.

Nigeria inch closer to title defence

Nigeria inch closer to title defence

The Nigerian team
to the third edition of the COPA Coca Cola football tournament in South
Africa remains on course to retain the title it won last year after
booking a quarter final slot for the tourney.

The Nigerian team
is one of the twelve African countries taking part in the in
competition, and is grouped alongside South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania
and Zimbabwe. The team began her campaign with a 5-0 victory over
Zimbabwe.

In the second game
against the host team, South Africa, Nigeria gave a good fight and the
game ended 1-1. However, the team was beaten 2-0 by the Tanzania team,
but rose up to the challenge in their fourth game by defeating Namibia.

Speaking to
journalist after their fourth game, Victor Ikpeba, the chief coach of
COPA Coca-Cola Nigeria team said it is good that the team made it to
the quarter finals. “Our target is to get the final four ticke, and I
believe we can get this because my player wants to make name for
themselves and they are ready to go,” he said. “I believe if we get to
the final four, anything can happen. Every team wants to beat Nigeria,
we know this and we will take each game as it comes.”

The Nigerian coach also mentioned that he is happy that Nigeria paraded one of the youngest stars at the championship.

Okuoka elated with award

Okuoka elated with award

The winner of the
highest goals scorer awards of the just concluded Gulder Five-a -side
tournament, Happiness Okuoka, says winning the award is one of the best
things to happen to him in a long time.

Attributing his
feat to the efforts of his team mates, Okuoka said the award will spur
him to greater heights. The player, who was the hit man for
Ajegunle-based 401 Road Planners, notched up seven goals to emerge the
tournament’s leading scorer.

“I am excited by
this award,” he said. “It was the result of hard work. More
importantly, it was the result of collective effort of the team.
Without the co-operation of my team mates, I would not have been able
to accomplish it.”

Okuoka’s team,
Planners, emerged winners of the five -a-side tournament after beating
a determined Talent builders of Lagos Island via penalty after the game
ended 1-1 at full time. The match, which saw the two teams going for
each other’s jugular was watched by a full crowd of spectators at the
Astroturf of the New Gymnasium Complex of the National Institute of
Sports (NIS) within the National Stadium in Lagos.

The tournament,
which began in March, was played in different centres across the
country with the final 12 teams coming into Lagos for the last leg of
the tournament.

Argentina in better shape than Eagles, says Demichelis

Argentina
in better shape than Eagles, says
Demichelis

Argentina defender,
Martin Demichelis, believes the Albiceleste will have an edge over the
Super Eagles when both sides meet on Saturday owing to the fact that,
unlike the Nigerians, they don’t have any injury concerns.

The Super Eagles,
like so many other teams taking part in the World Cup, are in South
Africa without some of their best legs, most notably Victor Anichebe,
Onyekachi Apam, and John Obi Mikel, no thanks to injuries.

Anichebe and Apam
were not selected for the World Cup as a result of their inabilities to
shrug off their respective injuries; while Mikel, who made the final
squad list for the World Cup, had to pull out after failing to overcome
a knee injury he picked up while on duty with his English Premier
League side Chelsea.

In contrast,
Argentina don’t have any injury problems to contend with, and
Demichelis believes that will give them an upper hand ahead of their
opening encounter against the Super Eagles.

Good fortune

“We are having the
good fortune that other teams are not,” Demichelis told a news
conference at Argentina’s base in the University of Pretoria sports
complex. “We’ve had no injuries and that gives the coaching staff the
confidence to demand the maximum from us,” added the Bayern Munich
star. I’m confident that in the remaining days we’ll be able to get
there in very good shape,” he said, with reference to Saturday’s
encounter against the Super Eagles scheduled for Ellis Park in
Johannesburg.

Demichelis added: “Some teams have played too many friendlies. Luckily Diego opted to come here and train in tranquillity.”

Selection headache

In Lionel Messi,
Argentina boast the world’s top player. They also have other top
forwards like Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Diego
Milito; but only Messi is guaranteed a starter’s shirt with their coach
Diego Maradona left with the burden of selecting who will get to
partner the Barcelona superstar in the attack against the Super Eagles.

But irrespective of this, Demichelis still thinks the Albiceleste
have an edge over the Super Eagles who, in his opinion, still don’t
have a team. “Diego has a big headache picking his side while Nigeria
have doubts,” he said. “I think that they may have some issues to
resolve in some positions and won’t get there (to the match) as good as
us.”

Yakubu banks on Haruna for more goals

Yakubu banks on Haruna for more
goals

Aiyegbeni Yakubu,
who scored one of the three goals against North Korea in the last
tune-up match for the Super Eagles played over the weekend, believes
the inclusion of Lukman Haruna could help the team in getting more
goals when the World Cup kick offs in South Africa on Friday.

“As for Haruna, I’m
not surprised with what he has so far achieved because he has been
training with us since 2008. In Angola (2010 Nations Cup), we had so
many defensive midfielders and it was difficult for the strikers. We
needed a creative midfielder and with what we have already seen, we
have found one. He will do more for the strikers,” Yakubu told
mtnfootball.com.

“He can do more to help this team even though I do not wish to put pressure on the young player.”

Mikel miss

Though the Everton
forward admitted that the Eagles will miss Chelsea midfielder John Obi
Mikel, who has been ruled out of the World Cup by injury, he has backed
Haruna to take his place and solve the problem the Super Eagles have
struggled with in recent years since the 2006 retirement of former
Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha.

“Mikel’s absence is
a big blow for us because he is a very good player, who has the
experience of playing on the big stage like the UEFA Champions League,
but we expect the other players to do their best and hopefully, we will
get the desired results,” said Yakubu.

Yakubu’s inclusion in the final list of players for South Africa 2010 has been questioned by some pundits.

However, it appears
he has silenced most of his critics with his clinical finish against
the North Koreans and is looking even more assured as the Super Eagles
set to face Argentina on Saturday at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

“I’m in good shape, most probably the best shape of my life, for this World Cup,” he continued.

“The training under (Super Eagles coach Lars) Lagerback has been superb not only for me, but the entire team.

“The belief in the team now is that we can achieve something here.”

Shittu dares Messi and Argentina

Shittu
dares Messi and
Argentina

Super Eagles
defender, Danny Shittu, has set his sights on making Nigeria’s opening
game against Argentina in Johannesburg a miserable one for the South
Americans, especially their superstar forward Lionel Messi.

The game comes up
on Saturday at Ellis Park, venue of South Africa’s unforgettable
victory at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, and it will be the third meeting
at the FIFA World Cup between the Super Eagles and the Albiceleste.

Previous meetings
in 1994 and 2002 have all ended in marginal wins for the Argentines,
who on paper are favourites for Saturday’s encounter, mostly on the
basis of the quality of players their coach Diego Maradona has at his
disposal; top of which is reigning World and European Player of the
Year Lionel Messi.

Messi is coming
into the World Cup on the back of a memorable season with Spanish side
Barcelona, unlike Shittu who had a frustrating campaign with English
Premier League side Bolton where he failed to make a single league
appearance.

Despite his
inability to feature for the Trotters this past season, the 29-year-old
Shittu was named in the Super Eagles’ World Cup squad by Lars Lagerback
and he appears all set to make South Africa 2010 a memorable one.

“For me, it’s
almost as if the season starts now,” Shittu told reporters in South
Africa. “I’m fresh, fit and ready for the challenge that awaits me. I’m
excited by it, seriously. I have nothing to fear, why should I? When
you’re a kid playing with your mates, you dream about playing in the
World Cup. So now that I’ve arrived, I’m going to savour and enjoy it.
I’m not just here to take part and swap shirts after the game.”

Stopping Messi

And looking ahead
to the clash against the Argentines, Shittu added: “As a defender, my
job will be to stop [the opposition’s] attacking players and that is
all I’m focused on. Of course, they have some of the best players in
the world, if not the best in the world in Messi. But I’m representing
my country at the first World Cup in Africa.”

“This is very special to Nigerians and Africans. We are not here to
be a footnote in the story of Argentina. We have 100million people
supporting us in Nigeria; we are here to make an impact, anything else
will rightly be seen as a failure,” he added.

‘Street Maniacs’ are Sprite Triple Slam champions

‘Street Maniacs’ are Sprite Triple Slam champions

The Sprite Triple
Slam national championship drew to a close on Sunday in Lagos with
‘Street Maniacs’ from Calabar Zone emerging winners in a keenly
contested final.

In emerging
winners, the boys from Calabar took home the top prize of N6 million
and a recording contract for a basketball-themed music video.

Handing a cheque of
the amount to the winners before a huge crowd of cheering fans, Coca
Cola Nigeria Marketing Director, Austin Ufomba, confirmed that the
company will sponsor the team’s basketball-themed music video to spark
up more creativity.

Youth in their
hundreds from all parts of Lagos stormed the venue of the event to get
a feel of the action and also catch glimpses of upcoming music, dance
and basketball talents, as well as the celebrities that graced the
event.

Former Big Brother
Africa 2009 housemates also came from their respective countries across
the continent to see the talents and cheer their colleague – Kevin
Chuwang Pam, winner of the BBA 2009 who hosted the event.

Night of fun

Fun and excitement
were in good supply at the final, as eight teams representing Benin,
Owerri, Calabar, Kaduna, Ado-Ekiti, Ibadan, Lagos I and Lagos II
engaged in a contest of will and talent, with the youngsters displaying
their skill and dexterity in music, dance and basketball. Each team
comprised three basketball players, two dancers and a singer.

Such was the level
of talent displayed that the three judges, Eldee the Don, a music
producer, Michael Egbebor of DNMT dance group and Mobolaji Akiode, a
former basket player and one-time member of Nigeria’s Olympic team, had
a hard time deciding the best among the contestants. At the end of the
day, they settled for the ‘Maniacs’ whose display of energy,
creativity, originality, attitude, spontaneity, set them apart from the
rest.

The Sprite Triple
Slam lived up to its billings. With MI and Wande Coal, two of Nigeria’s
finest hip hop stars and leading disc jockey, Jimmy Jatt, thrilling
spectators at the event.

Reacting to their
victory, the ‘Maniacs’ said: “Sprite Triple Slam gave us the platform
to display our talents for the world to see. Sprite surprised us when
they came to our neighbourhood in Calabar. We are ordinary boys who
love to play for fun. Now Sprite motivated us with N6 million. It is
just too much. We are going to use the money to better our education,
provide for our families.

Sprite Triple Slam has automatically created a career platform for us.”

Football’s biggest show rolls out in South Africa

Football’s biggest show rolls out in South Africa

When host South
Africa takes to the field against Mexico on June 11 at the Soccer City
Stadium, it will be the 708th game in the FIFA World Cup’s history.

A momentous
occasion it will be not only for the South Africans but the whole of
Africa as the biggest football show on earth is finally taking place in
Africa eighty years after the first edition held in Uruguay.

For Danny Jordaan,
CEO of the Local Organising Committee of the World Cup, it will be
mission accomplished after four years of painstaking planning and
organising. Four years during which Western media sustained pressure,
through fiercely critical reports, on FIFA to rethink its decision to
hand South Africa hosting rights of the tournament.

The battle has
indeed been fierce. From security concerns raised by the media in the
West, which has created fear in the minds of tourists in that part of
the world, the gang-up against the Vuvuzela, which was only resolved
last week after Jordaan assured that the decibel levels are not such as
would make it difficult for team benches to communicate with their
players, the organising committee faced immense challenges.

Jordaan and the
South African government can justifiably feel proud of their
accomplishment. The $4.6 billion reportedly spent on hosting the
tournament, including costs of building and renovating ten world-class
stadia, have clearly not been in vain.

The 32 teams are
now in town and the party is about to begin. Africa will be on fire for
the next one month. In South Africa, Nigeria and elsewhere on the
continent, people will talk about nothing other than football.

Festival of football

Indeed, it will be
a festival of football as the best players on the continent converge on
African soil to titillate football fans with their vast array of
football skills.

Never has Africa
been host to such deluge of football talent and it may be a very long
while before such constellation is seen here again. Cristiano Ronaldo,
Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Kaka, Franck Ribery and Ji-Sung Park are
some of the foreign talent that will set Africa at the Mundial. So also
will our African brigade of Didier Drogba, Osaze Odemwingie, Samuel
Eto’o, Rafik Saifi and Kwadwo Asamoah.

Our own Super
Eagles, long derided by their countrymen for their listless performance
under former coach, Shuaibu Amodu, seem to be sputtering into life
under new coach, Lars Lagerback. In the two friendly matches they
played last week under the direction of the Swede, Nigerians got to see
the Eagles coming together gradually as a unit. Tonight’s game against
North Korea, presents Lagerback another opportunity to firm up his
strategies for the tournament. With the Eagles’ final squad known, the
Nigerian coach can now turn his attention to sorting out those minor
details, which have a way of unhinging even the most carefully thought
out plans if unchecked.

In the case of the
Eagles, the defence is a key sticking point. With the reliable
Onyekachi Apam failing to make the cut through injury, Lagerback is
working round the clock to ensure that he melds the defence, which
includes Rabiu Afolabi returning to the squad since his stint with the
team in the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan; a match rusty Danny Shittu,
who sat out the entire season on the bench at Bolton and Joseph Yobo
who did not enjoy enough playing time in his club, Everton, into a
tight unit.

The African challenge

The Swede is a wily
tactician and has been sounding confident about his squad’s chances at
the tournament. Upon the Eagles’ arrival in Durban on Wednesday,
Lagerback told reporters: “We have a very tough group, the quality of
the opposition is very good, and what I know is that all the teams want
to win. The Super Eagles are ready to take on the world’s best. We know
there are high expectations, especially from our fans. If we give our
100 per cent, we can beat any team. But I am happy with everything so
far.”

Lagerback’s
confidence notwithstanding, the Eagles have their work clearly cut out.
Their progress in the tournament clearly would ride on the outcome of
their opening game against Argentina on June 12. The South Americans
have a formidable squad and are among favourites for the title. To get
past or even to survive them, the Eagles have to be at their best,
something Lagerback is hoping to achieve.

Aside the Eagles,
Africa’s other teams are hoping to make a statement, none more than
hosts, South Africa. The Alberto Parreir-coached squad, which went on a
training tour of Brazil and Germany, returned confident of their
chances in the tournament. The team’s Brazilian coach returned to South
Africa in a dilemma after home-based players in his team improved
massively during the training tour.

Despite their new
found form, pundits are not expecting them to go through in their
group, which includes two former world champions, Uruguay and France as
well as Mexico. However, given their performance at the Confederation
Cup, which they hosted last year, it may just be a mistake to write
them off.

Africa’s other
gladiators, Cote d ‘Ivoire, Algeria, and Ghana, are also not going to
the mundial to make up the numbers. The Didier Drogba-led Ivorians, who
exited in the first round at the last edition of the World Cup in
Germany despite boasting what was considered a decent squad, are eager
to make a statement this time round.

Ghana’s chances of
making it out of their group appear very slim given the absence of key
players like Laryea Kingston and the inimitable Michael Essien, who was
finally ruled out following his failure to recover from a knee injury
which hit since January this year.

Algeria, lumped
with England, USA and Slovenia face an uphill task in that group. On
the surface, the North African side will find it difficult to break out
of this group; however, the Algerians are nobody’s fools and on a good
day can mess up things for even the most technically balanced side.
Their major weakness seems to be getting them to rein in their
exuberance. Here, coach Rabah Saadane, has serious work to do.

Powerhouses weigh in

On the whole, it
promises to be an exciting tournament with traditional power
houses-Brazil, Germany and Italy expected to be threats to their
opponents. The Brazilian squad is, as usual, oozing class. Such is the
quality of the team that t wo-time World Footballer of the year,
Ronaldinho, failed to get a look in from Dunga despite switching over
to Milan to resurrect a flagging career.

The German team,
including exciting young forwards like Lucas Podolski, Bastian
Scheinsteinger and Toni Kroos and the experienced Miroslav Klose, will
give their group opponents, Ghana, Serbia and Australia, enough to chew.
