Omisore concedes defeat

Omisore concedes defeat

The Chairman of the
Senate Committee on Appropriation, Iyiola Omisore, has accepted the
verdict of the people of his constituency in the last Saturday election
where he lost his bid to return to the senate to Babajide Omoworare of
the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). The ACN won all seats for Osun
State in the National Assembly.

Speaking with
journalists yesterday, the senator, who represents Osun East in the
Upper chambers of the National Assembly, commended the turnout of the
people and peaceful conduct of the election, saying all point to a
hopeful future for the nation’s democracy.

Mr. Omisore, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently in his second term in the national legislature.

While
congratulating the winners, Mr. Omisore said the results of the
election confirms the readiness of President Goodluck Jonathan to give
the nation credible elections this time, and ensure that every eligible
Nigerian voter is not denied the right to choose their leaders and
representatives.

“I want to first
congratulate all the winners in last Saturday’s National Assembly
election. The peaceful conduct of the election was a clear signal that
our democracy has come to stay and that our politicians are improving.
Politics is a game of win and lose. If you win, you take it, if you
lost too, you should accept it in good faith. That is how we can
nurture our democracy into full maturity,” he enthused.

According to him,
the success of the first round of elections will prove to the world
that Nigerians are ready to allow democracy to thrive in their country,
adding “we cannot afford to fail because all eyes are on us. We need
credible and successful elections in this nation”.

He explained that
the result of the last election, especially in the Southwest, shows
that the ruling PDP was not as desperate as it had been portrayed in
the past by the oppositions, describing the party as one that ‘upholds
the tenets of democracy’.

The former deputy
governor of Osun State, advised the winning ACN members not to see
their victory as a ticket for self-serving mission, but a call to serve
the nation and opportunity to contribute their quota to the development
of their constituencies.

“The result of the
National Assembly elections should be regarded as the wish of the
electorate which we politicians must respect to safeguard the nation’s
growing democracy. In a true democracy, you don’t expect to be winning
every time. Even, life itself is about give and take,” he said.

He urged Nigerians
to be ready to participate fully in the remaining legs of this year’s
general elections, submitting that giving them priorities is the only
way to move the nation forward.

For this week’s
presidential election, Mr. Omisore said, “this is our country, all the
eligible voters must be ready to perform their civic duty by voting for
leaders of their choice”.

Delta, Bayelsa and Imo record highest cases of ballot snatching

Delta, Bayelsa and Imo record highest cases of ballot snatching

Delta State
recorded the highest cases of ballot box snatching in Saturday’s
National Assembly election, followed by Bayelsa and Imo states, the
Independent National Electoral Commission said yesterday.

The chairman of the
commission, Attahiru Jega, said the three states topped the chart of
incidences of diverted ballot boxes, amongst several other poll
malpractices but gave no specific figure.

An official of the
commission, however, said the highest number of the violation recorded
by Delta State during the relatively well-conducted election was nearly
50.

A spread of
detailed statistics of malpractices, including violence, diversion of
materials, lateness of officials and materials, during the elections on
state-by-state basis was expected from the commission on Monday. Mr.
Jega’s spokesperson, Kayode Idowu, later said there were problems with
the analysis of the data and the information would be made available
Tuesday.

Large-scale malpractice

While addressing
international observer teams, including the Commonwealth, African Union
and the National Democratic Institute, Mr. Jega said the worst cases of
the breaches, were recorded in the three states.

“There were
problems with thuggery. Luckily the police have made a number of
arrests in fact earlier today I got information that the police have
arrested over 500 people, many of them thugs,” he said.

“Delta is a state where we received most cases of ballot box snatching followed by Bayelsa and then followed by Imo states”.

Mr. Jega’s remarks
came as a growing number of political parties that lost in the
elections, laid complaints to the commission, amid concerns that the
overwhelming success of the election generally could deny attention on
genuine cases of violations no matter how minute they may appear.

The parties blamed
their defeat on large scale rigging by the ruling parties, ballot paper
stuffing and box snatching and demanded a rerun and redeployment of
INEC staff alleged to have been compromised.

In Bayelsa State
where one of the most damning cases of violence was recorded, the
opposition parties accused the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
of hijacking electoral materials in connivance with security operatives
including the police, the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) and some INEC
officials.

The parties, led by
the Labour Party (LP) Chairman in the state, Addo Badou, and the Action
Congress of Nigeria (ACN) told the electoral commission that elections
did not hold in six local government areas of the state. They demanded
the immediate removal of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner,
Edwin Nwatalari, for alleged connivance with the politicians.

‘Cancel the poll’

In Kwara State
where the PDP dominated in the election according to results announced,
the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Sunday threatened to contest the
results of the elections. Opposition parties have made similar calls in
Benue, Adamawa, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.

There are concerns
as to whether new measures including complex ballot paper security,
voters waiting behind to defend their votes and a customized ballot
box, are enough to deal with intricate electoral fraud scheme which
exploits human factor for a compromise.

In the case of Akwa
Ibom state where a raging rivalry between ruling PDP and the ACN
supporters recently reached violent dimensions, the parties say there
abound heaps of questions about the exercise and the commission says
they would be investigated when properly tabled before it.

After a startling
defeat margin on Saturday, the ACN has been quick to dismiss the
outcome of the elections and asked for a repeat as well as the removal
of the REC in that state, Maria Owi.

In a detailed
petition to Mr. Jega signed by the state chairman, Aniekan Akpan, the
party claims many of its agents were chased off from collation centres
by paid security agents siding with the ruling party while some corps
members were compelled to release surplus ballot papers to the party.

“Unused ballot
papers were not returned but were given to PDP members who used palm
kernels or bitter kola nuts to print in place of thumbs! What an
innovation,” the party said in the letter which spokesperson to Mr.
Jega, Kayode Idowu, said he could not confirm whether it had been
received as of Monday noon.

In a particular
case, in Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state, all registered
voters in the state voted for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP),
according to the announced results, leaving no allowance for voters who
died, travelled, took ill.

By yesterday, INEC headquarters could not confirm the total number
of petitions it has received already on the Saturday election.

Party protests outcome of Kwara poll

Party protests outcome of Kwara poll

The Action Congress
of Nigeria in Kwara State on Monday staged a protest in Ilorin
rejecting the outcome of Saturday’s National Assembly election that
gave the ruling Peoples Democratic Party a sweep to victory in the
state.

The protesters
alleged that the ruling party colluded with some INEC presiding
officers to influence the outcome of the poll, claiming that its
candidates were clearly leading at the wards level before the general
collation.

The peaceful
protest which was held in some parts of the state capital was, however,
planned to be heightened if INEC refuses to meet the protesters demand
for an investigation of the matter.

The ACN
governorship candidate in the state, Mohammed Dele Belgore, led the
protest with hundreds of youth holding brooms and chanting anti-ruling
party songs.

Also at the rally
were the Kwara ACN Caretaker Committee Chairman, Kayode Olawepo;
Senatorial Candidate (Kwara Central), Ibrahim Oloriegbe; Senatorial
Candidate (South), Anu Ibiwoye; Senatorial Candidate (North), Musa
Audu; and other party members.

Victory though the courts

Addressing the
rally, Mr. Belgore thanked the people of the state for their turn out
at the polls, declaring that “we know that they voted for us massively,
but their mandate was stolen.”

He, however, urged
the people not to “despair because we will restore this mandate through
the legal means. But let it be clear to these riggers that it can no
longer be business as usual.

“We will no longer
allow anybody to impose himself or herself on our people. The people of
Kwara want a change and this was what they demonstrated last Saturday
when they trooped out in thousands to vote for the ACN. But this
mandate was stolen. We will help our candidates to reclaim their stolen
mandate, no matter what. We urge our people to be calm and not to
resort to violence.”

He described the
rally as a means to send a strong message to election riggers and their
collaborators to desist henceforth, maintaining that the party “won the
election with a landslide but they manipulated the outcome in
continuation of the status quo. This will not stand.”

The party, through
its chairman, however, said that it will address a press briefing today
on the outcome of the election, saying the statement will adddress
issues of violent intimidation of the voters in areas like Asa,
Ifelodun where he alleged ACN agents were arrested and kept out of
circulation until the end of the election.

However when the
police spokesperson, Dabo Ezekiel was called at the end of the election
on Saturday, he told next that nobody was arrested throughout the
election, claiming that he was coming from the state CID to see the
situation of things there.

A day after the
election, reports of an arrest of 23 thugs was however announced but
Mr. Ezekiel refused to comment on the development when contacted.

However, the ruling party chairman, Yusuf Ayedun has also debunked
the allegation of rigging saying that whoever is not satisfied could go
to any length to get justice.

Defeated parties call for cancellation of Rivers poll

Defeated parties call for cancellation of Rivers poll

The Action Congress
of Nigeria ( ACN) and other opposition parties in Rivers State have
criticised the conduct of Saturday’s National Assembly elections in the
state, calling for the cancellation of the poll.

The results of the
election released by the Independent National Electoral Commission on
Sunday showed the Peoples Democratic Party was victorious in all 12
federal constituencies and the three Senatorial districts where
elections were held.

The ACN, however, claims the victory was earned through voter manipulation and rigging.

“In the collation
centres, our agents were refused entry by the Joint Task Force and the
Police. There were no results sheets in many areas of the state, such
as Khana, Degema, Gokana, Tai, Oyigbo, Obio/Akpor, Opobo/Nkoro, Onelga,
Andoni,” read the ACN statement, which was signed by Uche Okwukwu, the
state chairman of the party.

Similarly, Otonye
Briggs, the governorship candidate of the Congress for Political
Change, yesterday expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the
elections.

Mr Briggs said his
party was denied an opportunity to fully participate in the process as
there was no level playing field for political parties in the state.

He also accused
loyalists of the ruling PDP of intimidating and harassing CPC members
and supporters. In the course of the elections, he said, one of the
party’s members was killed in Abonnema, the capital of Akuku-Toru Local
Government Area.

Mr Briggs added
that the killing was the manifestation of acts of repression against
the party in the state. He, however, urged supporters of the party to
come out en masse for subsequent elections and vote for the CPC.

Barthlomew
Emuekperi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance also said his party
has problems with the elections. “No doubt, the elections were bad,” he
said when asked about his party’s reaction to the conduct and outcome
of the polls.

Mr Emuekperi said the party will be issuing an official statement on the elections.

No petitions

Despite the
complaints, none of the parties could confirm if they had written an
official petition to INEC. As at press time, neither the Resident
Electoral Commissioner, Aniedi Ikoiwak nor the Public Affairs Officer
of the Commission could be reached for comments on the matter.

The director of the Rotimi Amaechi campaign organisation, Ezebunwo
Nyesom Wike, said the allegations were false and challenged the
opposition to provide proof to back their claims.

Kwara plans an end to Sarakis’ hold

Kwara plans an end to Sarakis’ hold

Kazeem Adekilekun (not the real surname) has been
going to the Saraki’s home for political patronage since the age of 15.
Now 35 years old, he voted for the first time and also for the
politicians of his desire, saying it is goodbye to the political
dynasty in Ilorin.

“I used to follow my father here and I grew up to
start coming myself. Even when I was at Osiele College of Education, I
cannot come home during political era without coming here to be part of
whatever schedule for the time. I grew up to know it that way, but I
think that is gone, we have been liberated,” Mr. Adekilekun told NEXT
at his business centre around Taiwo Oke, Ilorin.

According to some of those who spoke to NEXT, the
ouster of the Sarakis’ is imminent, as most of them said that not even
the governor can come back from the Senate to contest and win.

“What Kwarans want is no Saraki in directing our
affair again. By the time a new person that is not installed by Baba is
not there – and I am sure that with the wave of things the marriage
between Bukola and PDP cannot last – then the state will soon start
enjoying the possibility of having new entrants in politics,” said
Sarafa Adekomi, a banker and father of two, at one of the popular
newspapers stand at Challenge.

Describing Olusola Saraki’s style of politics as
extinct, a young man who had come to see the possibility of sharing
money ahead of Saturday’s election, said: “Bukola Saraki gathered all
the youth of PDP to his side while baba is going with the elderly ones,
and now you can see what is all about. What I know is just that this is
the political era and I am here to get what belongs to me,” he said in
Yoruba.

New strategy

NEXT, however, gathered that the elder Saraki’s
party, the ACPN, had regrouped its loyalists by disowning some leaders
and youth who were alleged to have been more interested in the
financial benefits accruable from the party. It also organised groups
of youth into areas, for door-to-door campaign for the forthcoming
elections.

At Mr. Saraki’s Ode Opobiyi area ward, where the
state governor defeated his father’s party to the third position, no
one was willing to talk openly. While some jokingly said the squirrel,
which is ACPN’s logo, fell from the tree, others believe that the elder
Saraki is still relevant to the success of the state.

L’Union Sportive drags Enyimba to CAF over alleged assault

L’Union Sportive drags Enyimba to CAF over alleged assault

Reigning
Gabonese league champions, L’Union Sportive de Bitam (USB), have lodged
a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against
Enyimba claiming that USB officials were assaulted by fans of the
Nigerian club in their last meeting in Aba.

USB and Enyimba
clashed penultimate Sunday in the eastern Nigerian city of Aba in the
return leg fixture of their CAF Champions League tie with Enyimba
winning 2-1 to send the Gabonese side out of the competition.

The Gabonese side
led until midway through the second half when Victor Barnabas drew
Enyimba back on level terms from the penalty spot before a last-gasp
header from Josiah Maduabuchi secured the win for the two-time African
champions.

USB however claim
that their officials were assaulted by Enyimba fans during the match at
the Enyimba International Stadium and have lodged a complaint with the
governing body of African football.

In a statement
published by Gabon Info, the management of the Gabonese side said its
technical staff and other members of their contingent to Aba suffered
an “ordeal” at the hands of Enyimba fans who they claim used head
butts, kicks and whips on them while the game played out on the pitch.

The statement also
claimed that a cameraman with Gabon’s state TV RTG, who was filming the
match, was attacked by fans of the Nigerian club and his camera stolen.

The statement
further added that players of the Gabonese side were unable to get back
to their changing room during the half-time break because of the threat
from the fans and as a result had to remain on the pitch during the
break.

Denial

Officials of
Enyimba have however denied USB’s allegations, claiming that no acts of
violence were perpetrated by its fans against the visitors.

“The fans did no
such thing; they were at their best behaviour and stood by us
throughout the game even when we were a goal down,” said Enyimba’s
chairman, Anyansi Agwu in an interview with NEXT.

He added that “the fans did not attack anyone. I think they (USB)
are just making up excuses.” No date has yet been fixed for a final
decision by CAF, which is carrying out investigations. Meanwhile,
Enyimba are scheduled to play host to Libya’s Al-Ittihad in the next
round of the competition on April 24.

New Bayern Munich coach thrown in the deep end

New Bayern Munich coach thrown in the deep end

Interim Bayern
Munich coach Andries Jonker could not have wished for a more
challenging start as the German champions battle to rescue a barren
season with a Champions League spot for next season.

The 48-year-old
Jonker, Louis van Gaal’s assistant and his successor after he was
sacked on Sunday following a draw at Nuremberg which relegated them to
fourth in the league, must launch a five-game winning burst starting
against second-placed Bayer Leverkusen on the weekend.

In a twist of fate,
Leverkusen, who could scupper Bayern’s hopes of clinching a third place
finish that would put them into Champions League qualification, are
coached by Jupp Heynckes, already appointed as new Bayern coach for
next season.

With next year’s
Champions League final to be staged in Munich at their own Allianz
Arena, it would be a catastrophe for Bayern if they missed out on
Europe’s top club competition.

“I expect an
explosion against Leverkusen. I expect that the players will finally
get rid of that straitjacket they have been wearing in the past
months,” said club president Uli Hoeness after announcing Jonker as van
Gaal’s immediate successor.

Perfect replacement

Jonker is seen as
the perfect fire-fighting choice with Bayern bosses saying he knew how
the club operated and enjoyed the players’ trust, something his
predecessor had long lost.

“That’s just fairy
tales that the players were behind (Van Gaal). You could see that a
couple of our players’ game was dictated by pure fear,” said Hoeness.

The softly spoken
Dutchman, who was also flamboyant Van Gaal’s assistant at Barcelona,
will most likely reappoint keeper Joerg Butt as his number one after
van Gaal had surprisingly opted to give the start to youngster Thomas
Kraft midway through the season despite the club board’s vocal
objections.

The 36-year-old’s
experience is seen as crucial in the final phase of the league, with
Bayern on 52 points, one behind Hanover 96 and nine off Leverkusen.
Borussia Dortmund lead on 66.

“We wanted a man
who knows the conditions here, who knows what needs to be changed,”
said club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, explaining the club’s choice to
appoint Jonker.

“He said that he will keep all the good things but also change what
needs to be changed. I think Andries Jonker has a very clear plan.”

Djokovic’s shadow hangs over subdued Nadal

Djokovic’s shadow hangs over subdued Nadal

In-form Novak
Djokovic is not even competing at this week’s Monte Carlo Masters yet
Rafael Nadal can still sense the Serb lurking in the shadows as the
clay court season begins in stifling sunshine.

For a man who won
every clay tournament he entered last year and who at Monte Carlo is
bidding to be the first player in the open era to win the same event
seven times in a row, the Spanish world number one was remarkably
subdued on Monday.

Two straight final
defeats to Djokovic on the hard courts at Indian Wells and Miami have
left their mark despite the switch to clay and the Serb’s absence from
Monte Carlo to rest a knee injury.

“I feel very
beatable when I go on court. The last six years on clay, I could never
have imagined what I did. It’s almost impossible to repeat a season
like last year,” Nadal told reporters at the Country Club, perched
above the shimmering sea.

“It’s almost a year
since I’ve played on clay. As usual, I try to watch videos (of myself)
to remember what I have to do. Last year I started to play and felt
fantastic from the beginning. Every year is different. You need
matches.” World number two Djokovic, whose injury is expected to clear
up in the next few days, has won 24 straight matches in 2011 and
nine-times Grand Slam champion Nadal reckons that form can be
transferred onto clay despite the Serb skipping this week.

“I’m sure on clay he’s going to be good,” Nadal said, muscles bulging out of his shirt sleeves.

Advantages

“This year Novak
has a lot of advantages. He is in a perfect situation to be number one.
I’m sure he’ll be number one next month. He started the season playing
unbelievably. In my opinion he didn’t even play his top level in Indian
Wells and Miami.” Nadal, who fought to keep the glamorous but small
scale Monte Carlo tournament a Masters event, has such an attachment to
Monaco that he had a special audience with Prince Albert on Sunday.

“I played my best
tennis ever on clay I think here last year,” added Nadal, due to play
his first match on Wednesday. “This place is one of my favourites in
the world.”

World number three
Roger Federer was keen to point out he is no mug on clay as the build
up to next’s month’s French Open begins. “I feel very strong on the
surface. It’s the surface I grew up on. Everybody knows that by now. I
can make a huge step forward,” the Swiss said.

If Federer’s recent
form is patchy, Andy Murray’s has been downright dreadful since his
Australian Open final defeat to Djokovic and the Briton is no nearer to
finding a new coach.

“I’m not any closer. I’m trying to concentrate on playing,” the world number four said.

“I feel better this year, I just haven’t been playing well in the matches. I’m sure this week there will be a few upsets.”

Wanted: a new breed of sports journalists

Wanted: a new breed of sports journalists

Only mischievous
elements among us will say that Tayo Balogun’s assessment of sports
reporters in this great nation as being inept, corrupt and lazy, is
empty talk or mere grandiose language. For me, and I believe many other
proactive, forward-looking, committed and God-fearing sports writers
with me, Mr Balogun’s assertions, graphically spelt out on this column
last week, constitute a revelation that requires very urgent action to
save Nigerian sports.

It is also a
clarion call to all sports-loving Nigerians to please team up with us
to initiate effective strategies that will eventually bring some degree
of sanity to sports journalism in Nigeria. We cannot and must not allow
sports reporting to continue like this. We must not continue to deceive
ourselves ‑ or allow a bunch of nincompoops, who have absolutely no
regard for decency, decorum or standard, to deceive us. Fellow
sports-loving Nigerians, it is high time we told them: Enough of idiocy
and shenanigans!

Samson Kabian,
FIFA’s football development officer, visited Nigeria’s NFA, sorry NFF,
in January, 2011, and saw the confusion Nigerian sports writers have
let take root in this country. Like frogs in the kettle, Nigerians have
been mischievously indoctrinated into swallowing such confusion and
deceit hook, line, and sinker. We have been made to understand,
however, that, those who are assumed to be in charge of football
administration in Nigeria at present are known as the NFA when they
desperately need their own portion of the ‘national cake’ and become
NFF when they engage in sponsorship deals or shameless trips like the
ill-fated Obama International Football Competition. Nigerian sports
writers are pretending that all is well with football administration,
or some are absolutely ignorant of this situation. What a shame! What a
travesty! Please forgive the digression.

Anyway, Samson
Kabian, was at the NF(F)(A) ‑ please feel free to take your choice ‑
and since we are in the middle of the democratic process called
elections, you are free to vote for whichever you consider worthy for
Nigeria (NFA i.e. ‘No Fruitful Agenda’, or NFF i.e. ‘No Fruitful
Foundation’) parties of Nigeria. Let me warn that it will be very
dangerous for you to ‘siddon look’ o. You do that at the detriment of
the present and future of Nigerian sports. Oh blimey! I digressed again.

Okay. So Samson
Kabian visited the Glass House, where he had a meeting with the
executive committee of the body governing football in Nigeria. During
this meeting, I was exclusively and authoritatively informed that Mr
Kabian bared his mind on the state of grassroots football development
in Nigeria. Mr Kabian was said to have told Aminu Maigari and his team
that countries like Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire are on their fourth level
of football development projects, while a Country like Cape Verde is on
its fifth, but our beloved great nation, Nigeria, is still on the first
project, which has not even been absolutely concluded! Mr Kabian was
reported to have told Mr Maigari and those present at the meeting that
“…you are lagging behind schedule and should be benefiting more…”
This comment made by Mr Kabian, whether we believe it or not, is the
true state of grassroots sports development in Nigeria. Was this
extensively reported on the pages of Nigerian newspapers? NO! Were
there no members of the Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria (SWAN)
at that meeting? They were there, but we have it on good authority that
“efforts” were made by members of the executive body governing our
football to “kill” the story. Hence it was deemed “not fit” for the
consumption of fellow Nigerians. Brown envelopes were distributed and
that was the end of the issue. Business should continue as usual. After
all, who cares whether football develops in Nigeria or not. In as much
as we are able to beat Ethiopia and Kenya and Sierra Leone, that is
enough. Any form of developmental process can be forever labelled “Keep
In View”. The mouths of busybodies like Mr Kabian should be stuffed
with some naira, no, dollar notes, to keep them quiet. What is his
business with grassroots football development anyway?

Fellow Nigerians,
this is just a tip of the iceberg on the current state of sports
journalism in Nigeria. This is why there is urgent need for us to pray
that “…every tree (in this case, sports journalist), not planted by
God” in Nigerian sports should be uprooted. This is one of the ways we
can all join hands to save Nigerian sports.

Eight teams vie for para-soccer trophy

Eight teams vie for para-soccer trophy

The
Easter season will witness intense para-soccer action as eight teams
compete for glory at the fourth Promasidor Para-Soccer Championship.

The tournament,
organised by the Lagos State Paralympics Association (LSPA) and Total
Consult Limited and sponsored by Promasidor Nigeria Limited, will see
the eight teams coming from Lagos, Kaduna, Rivers and Adamawa states
for the competition.

Chairman of the
LSPA, Babatunde Awelenge, stated that the competition is geared towards
encouraging the physically-challenged to embrace sports and to be
socially responsible, adding that physical fitness aids the disabled
person’s ability. “We believe that there is ability in disability. If
the physically-challenged channel their energies to sporting
activities, it will make them socially responsible in the society.” Mr
Awelenge also said that it would be a good opportunity to evaluate
Lagos Paralympics athletes. “We also want to use the tournament to
prepare our athletes for the 17th National Sports Festival scheduled
for June in Port Harcourt.” Awelenge, who is also the vice-president of
the paralympics committee for the south-west zone, commended Promasidor
for the sponsorship and appealed to other corporate organisations to
emulate the company.

The championship,
which will hold from April 22 to April 24 at the University of Lagos
(Unilag) Indoor Sports Hall, will feature teams like Premium Blazers,
Total Consult, NAS Warriors and Lead United all from Lagos; Team Rivers
and Amaechi Babes from Rivers while Kaduna Para-Soccer team and Brai
Moi team will be representing Adamawa.

Speaking on behalf
of the Managing Director of Total Consult, consultants to the tourney,
Idowu George, the para-soccer coordinator, said the company is keen to
see that this edition is successful. He noted that Promasidor’s
interest in the championship would go a long way to help the
physically-challenged in showcasing their God-given talent. “The
championship is meant to take the physically-challenged off the
streets; it will also prevent them from engaging in criminal
activities,” he said.

Mr George promised the competing athletes that the competition would
be rewarding as cash prizes and trophies would be given to the best
teams in the competition. Last year, the competition was won by Lead
Warriors, while Total Consult Terrors and Baba Mai emerged second and
third, respectively.
